Fab36 brings to you the history of NYSC : The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was a scheme established by Law on the 22nd of May, year 1973 under the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon which stated that the NYSC scheme was being established “with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity”.

The National Youth Service Corps scheme was established at the end of the bitter 30-month Nigerian civil war that ravaged the country so as to imbibe the spirit of nationalism in Nigerian youths. The bloody civil war which emerged as a result of disunity, misunderstanding and cultural differences of Nigerians making the NYSC scheme important in rehabilitation, re-construction and reconciliation of the nation.

As a developing country Nigeria is plagued by poverty, mass illiteracy, housing problems, shortage of high skilled manpower, woefully inadequate socioeconomic infrastructural facilities, poor water and sewage facilities, bad roads, poor healthcare services.

Faced with these problems and the rebuilding of the country after the civil war the Nigerian government set the following fresh goals, and objectives for the country ;

  • A united, strong and self reliant nation
  • A strong and dynamic economy
  • A land of bright and full opportunities for everyone
  • A free and democratic society.

After months of deliberations, consultations, and planning the NYSC was established to strengthen the national unity and integration, to bring peace among Nigerians and accelerate socio-economic growth in the country.

First Director General Of NYSC In Nigeria

Ahmadu Ali served as the first Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) between 1973 to1975. The current Director-General of the NYSC is Brig. Gen. Sule Zakari Kazaure.

NYSC Corp members are posted to cities across the country far from their city of origin and are expected to mix with people of other tribes so as to learn the culture of the indigenes in the place they are posted to. This action of posting people away from their city of origin is aimed at bringing about unity in the country and to help Nigerian youths appreciate other ethnic groups in the country. After posting there is always an orientation period of about three weeks, which is spent in a military controlled boot camp. After the one year program there is also a passing out ceremony known as Passing Out Parade { POP }.
