As at 2006, Lagos had a population of 7,682,953. Exactly ten years later, Lagos has a huge population of over 21 million people. This state has an ever increasing growth in population due to its geographical location and advancement. It is also seen as a state with budding opportunities for everyone. The city is home to a lot of companies, small and medium scale enterprises, tourist sites, and the likes. It also has great entertainment spots. As at 2016, Lagos is the largest city in Africa.

  • 2. KANO

Kano city in Kano state has a population of over 4 million people as at 2016, making it the second largest city in Nigeria. The city spans about 499 square kilometers and comprises of eight Local Government Areas namely Fagge, Dala, Gwale, Nasarawa, Taurani, Kano Municipal, Ungogo, and Kumbotso. Kano is known for its numerous commercial activities which attract people from different parts of the country.

  • 3. IBADAN

The hilly city has the largest metropolitan geographical area. It was once regarded as the most populated city in Nigeria and the third in Africa after Cairo and Johannesburg. Recent studies done in 2016 have estimated the population of Ibadan to be about 4 million. This makes Ibadan the third largest city in Nigeria.

  • 4. ABUJA

Located in the center and being the capital city of Nigeria, Abuja has a teeming population of 3.1 million people according to estimates in 2016 making it the fourth largest city. Various satellite towns such as Gwagwalada, Lugbe, Suleja, Kuje and so on have emerged due to the increasing population.


The ever-bustling city of Port-Harcourt, the capital of Rivers state has an estimated population of 2.5 million people as at 2016. This makes Port-Harcourt the fifth largest city. It is home to a lot of oil companies which explains it’s ever increasing the population.
