National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria { NPMCN }: All you need to know

The National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) establishment was made possible by the law of Nigeria in the National Postgraduate Medical College Decree No. 67 of 24th September, year 1979. The college is a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal. The college was set up as the apex tertiary institution of Medical Education in Nigeria with the major function of producing specialists in all branches of Medicine and Dentistry in the country.

The National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) aims to produce medical and dental specialists of the highest standards who would in turn provide world class services in teaching research and health care. The first president of the college was Dr. T. O. Ogunlesi who was president between 1979 to December 1983. The mission of the postgraduate college is to plan, monitor, evaluate and implement postgraduate programs required to produce medical and dental specialist of the highest quality, ability, which are competent and dedicated. The college also aims to provide teaching and optimal healthcare for the people of the country. This postgraduate being the apex college in Nigeria was also established to improve the health standards of the country and gradually produce specialist that can improve the health sector of the country.

This Nigerian Postgraduate college is being run through the organisation of the curricula for professional postgraduate education in the various specialized branches of medicine and dentistry. The college also conducts professional postgraduate examination of candidates before they can be fully certified as Specialists in their selected area of specialization. These specialists go on to become the Consultants in Tertiary Health Institutions and also Lecture in various college of health, medical and dental schools in Universities all over the country.

The National Postgraduate College of Nigeria performs a lot of unique functions like; Accrediting training institutions for professional postgraduate training of doctors and dentists, the college updates the public of the accredited institutions with their periodic publication of a list of accredited institutions. The organization of professional postgraduate offers training programs and development of medical curricula as well as the conduct of update courses for training in various specialized branches of medicine and dentistry.

The college also conducts professional postgraduate examinations for candidates in the various Faculties of medicine and organizes a one year Clinical Attachment (abroad training) for qualified resident doctors in the country. Though the college is not limited to the above functions as they still carry out other activities necessary in development of postgraduate medical education and quality healthcare in Nigeria.
