Have you been wondering which states are the Poorest States in Nigeria ?.  Not all states are equal in terms of wealth. Yobe state is considered as the poorest state in Nigeria. With a GDP of US$2,011, it sure is. This state is located in the North Eastern part of the country and has Damaturu as its capital. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people in this state. It is worthy of note that, this state has one of the largest cattle markets in west Africa.

In recent years, the insurgents in the North East had been bedeviling this state and inhibiting it development.

Gombe state is also located in the Northeastern part of the country and have the city of Gombe as its capital city. It is said to be the 2nd poorest state in Nigeria with a GDP of US$2,501. This state can be regarded as an egalitarian state.

Agriculture is also the main occupation of the people in this state and it has the only surviving grain depot in Nigeria.

Abakaliki is the capital of Ebonyi state. Ebonyi state is the least populated state in Nigeria and the only state from south east in this list. Agriculture is the most important economic activity in this state. Crops produced here includes rice, yam, potatoes, maize, beans, and cassava. The State is also blessed with solid minerals like lead and salt. It GDP is US$2,732.

Ekiti state is a Yoruba dominated state and the only state from south west in this group. Anyway, Agriculture is also the main economic activity of this part of the country and its GDP is put at US$2,848.

Jigawa state is located in North western part of the country and have the city of Dutse as its capital. This state has a GDP of US$2,988 making it the 5th poorest state in Nigeria . Just like the other states above and the ones below, Agriculture is the main occupation of the people.

  • 6. NASARAWA STATE

Nasarawa state is one of the states bordering the Federal capital territory, Abuja. Ironically, it is one of the poorest states in Nigeria and has a GDP of US$3,022. It capital is Lafia and the most important economic activity in the area is agriculture. Nasarawa prides itself as the home of solid minerals and as such, it is blessed with enormous solid minerals.

Birnin Kebbi is the capital of kebbi state. This state is located in North-western part of the country and due to it GDP of US$3,290, it is regarded as one of the poorest states in Nigeria and takes the 7th spot. Agriculture also is the main occupation in this area.

Taraba state is located in Northern Nigeria and Jalingo is it capital. The main occupation in this state is agriculture and it is the 8th poorest state in the country. It has a GDP of US$3,397.

Kwara state is located in North central Nigeria and have Ilorin as its capital. This state can be said to be a yoruba state but have a substantial number of fulanis living in it. This state like its North central counterpart (Nasarawa state) is one of the poorest state in Nigeria. The GDP of kwara state according to the information on Wikipedia is US$3,84, making it the 9th poorest Nigerian state.
